The Hostess Gift
The Hostess Gift
You’ve been invited to dinner. You have been asked to make a salad or bring a bottle of wine. Perhaps, you were told to bring nothing at all. The dilemma arises. You don’t want to show up empty handed. Oh what to bring. Here is a hint. Most people don’t want you to bring anything beyond the requested dish. Of course, the gesture is always lovely. So if gift giving makes you smile and you must bring something, bring something small, useful and practical.
Welcomed hostess gift ideas:
Fresh cut flowers (no vase necessary)
A dessert
A bottle of wine or dessert wine
A jar of specialty jam or honey
A small house plant if they like plants
A dishtowel
Non holiday specific cocktail napkins (paper)
A pretty bar of soap
A box of notecards
A softly scented candle (not too sweet and no strong florals)
Some of these items may not be appropriate for all friends. Think about what your friend might like. Don’t get something just to give something. If your friend is a minimalist, or has a small home, they truly will be grateful for your presence and not your present.
What not to give:
Holiday specific items. If these items can only be used once a year, don’t get it. Many items go unused for years and take up space
Holiday ornaments. Some people are very particular about the ornaments they choose for their tree
Dust collectors that serve no other function than to clutter a countertop or shelf. (think paperweight)
House plants if your friend isn’t into plants or has a pet. Plants can be poisonous to pets
Wine or spirits if your hosts don’t drink
